I miss the phase of life where I had no chronic health issues. On the whole, my health has been pretty good. I am still very active in my late forties. There is no activities I truly love that I have had to give up due to health reasons: I am noticing though that slowly bud steadily everything is getting a little more difficult and my list of mostly minor chronic health issues continues to grow each year. I also included a lot of resources on maintaining good health and aging well.

I miss not worrying about if I will sleep well or how much is too much for my ankle? Why my headaches take forever to go away? Why does my knee hurt at random times? Why isn’t my back pain going away?

I still rarely get sick which is nice, but I am definitely starting to feel my mortality a bit. I think being around kids all the time though keeps me relatively young at heart, which I believe is really an important key to aging well. I have a smoothie and mushroom coffee in the morning everyday, take my vitamins and supplements and hope that this will be enough along with regular exercise to live long enough to accomplish most of my goals.

  1. Prioritize Regular Exercise: Engage in a mix of aerobic, strength training, and flexibility exercises to maintain overall fitness. Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise per week.
  2. Maintain a Balanced Diet: Consume a variety of nutrient-rich foods, including fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats. Stay hydrated and limit processed foods, sugars, and excessive salt.
  3. Stay Hydrated: Proper hydration is crucial for overall health, helping with digestion, joint lubrication, and temperature regulation. Aim to drink an adequate amount of water throughout the day.
  4. Prioritize Sleep: Ensure you get sufficient, quality sleep. Most adults need 7-9 hours of sleep per night. Create a relaxing bedtime routine and establish a comfortable sleep environment.
  5. Manage Stress: Incorporate stress-reducing activities into your routine, such as meditation, deep breathing exercises, yoga, or hobbies. Chronic stress can negatively impact both physical and mental health.
  6. Regular Health Check-ups: Schedule regular check-ups with your healthcare provider to monitor your health, address any concerns, and catch potential issues early.
  7. Socialize and Stay Connected: Maintain strong social connections with friends and family. Socializing helps combat loneliness and contributes to overall mental well-being.
  8. Mental Stimulation: Keep your mind active by engaging in activities that stimulate cognitive function, such as reading, puzzles, learning new skills, or taking educational courses.
  9. Limit Alcohol and Avoid Smoking: Moderation is key when it comes to alcohol consumption, and avoiding smoking altogether contributes significantly to better health outcomes as you age.
  10. Safety First: Take precautions to prevent accidents and injuries. Keep your living environment safe, use assistive devices if needed, and be mindful of your physical limitations.

    1. It is also mentally difficult to accept that it is only getting worse from here. I do find that I am willing to pursue my goals more vigorously because I know I am running out of time. It is definitely a sense of urgency that was not there before.
