What are you good at?

I have worked on this skill most of my life. It coincides with my ability to be annoying and make terrible jokes.

Whether it is an impromptu lecture on the stock market, a unwanted Socratic Seminar on the Trump Trial, or treating my spouse as a student. I can get under family members skin in no time at all.

If someone hasn’t had to tell me to shut the hell up before breakfast, I feel like a subpar history teacher and parent. After I grade my kids on their chores, but before mandatory reading enrichment time, sometimes I think maybe I am going a little too extreme on this whole “my dad is a history teacher” thing, but then I remember kids kind of have to do what I say, after all, it is all for their benefit, right?

My alter ego

Field trip days are especially fun. I have to gently “motivate” my kids by threatening them with no internet time, so they will get in the car. Then off we go to the amazing cultural centers around Los Angeles from open to close with no lunch break. It is absolutely wonderful! Everyone has such a positive attitude at the end of the day that as soon as we get home, they immediately go to their room and don’t talk to me anymore. I assume they are looking up questions that they had from our exciting day!

  1. I can relate! 😂

    1. Our kids don’t know how lucky they are 🙂

  2. Well said I’m chuckling out loud. Witty and clever. 😊

    1. Thanks, I try! Want to hear about how the stock market is doing?

      1. 🙂

  3. Reading that on Sunday while enjoying my coffee was delightful and entertaining!

    1. I wasn’t sure how people would take it, but it seems to of been well received 🙂 Thanks for the comment as always.

  4. Great posts as always. This is an interesting question because I honestly believe I’m only good at one thing: writing. As far back as I can remember, I have always wanted to become a famous writer. My passion for the art of writing began in my childhood when I was first introduced to the art of filmmaking. Writing became a way I could express my love for movies. I believe I’m pretty good at what I do even when I have been told I really don’t matter by cyberbullies on WordPress. I’ve since learnt the importance of pursuing my passion in life regardless of what others may think.

This prompt brought to mind the fantastic film “The Fabelmans”. It tells semi-autobiographical story of how Steven Spielberg sought to become a famous filmmaker. Spielberg chose to overcome obstacles of bullying, divorce and discrimination to pursue the one thing he was passionate about: making movies. Here’s why it’s well worth watching:

    1. You are a fantastic writer. You have a nice flow of words, excellent command of literary/film analysis, and a very relatable personal style. Don’t listen to the cyberbullies, they have to live inside their cyberbullying heads, it must be miserable for them!

Fablemans is officially on my watch list! Thanks for the comment as always!

      1. Thanks so much for the positive words of feedback. It truly means the world to me. I’ve learnt to ignore cyber bullies as they are simply part of being a blogger.

“The Fabelmans” is definitely worth seeing!

      2. That stuff is just a reflection of what has been done to them. Usually they have been tormented much worse than what they put out there. That being said though, don’t take any s*** from them.

I will let you know what I think!

  5. Sounds like a fun past time.

    1. Definitely one of my favorites 🙂

  6. Nothing beats being untastic and getting laugh a groan and a you didnt did you look before breaky.
Also whats the point of knowing it if you cant share it.
As well theres the whole just because you learnt to read on monday it dosent mean you can read now and never have to learn it again. Any decent lesson is as you blog is called a lifelong lesson.
Thanks for your posts i may not have time to read em all but you often get me thinking just with a title and the first paragraph.
You sound like my kinda human.

    1. The older I get, I think I get more satisfaction from the groans than the laughs 🙂
The only thing predictable about learning is forgetting…
My pleasure, I am glad you enjoy them and find them thought provoking. I certainly enjoy writing and sharing them.
      Humans for life!

  7. This made me laugh…ty. You remind me of a friend who also is a history teacher, coach, annoyingly funny and missed.

    1. It is a blessing and a curse 🙂 Sorry about your friend.
