What skills or lessons have you learned recently?

I have recently learned the skill of teaching using artificial intelligence, although, I have not practiced it much yet. Whether we like it or not, artificial intelligence looks like it is here to stay.

I would compare teaching with artificial intelligence to using fire. Fire can keep us warm, or burn down our house. It is all about how we use a tool to determine what a good or bad outcome.

My Classroom

Artificial intelligence programs we have can: 1) make a quiz using keywords as input in seconds, grade quizzes/tests instantaneously, give feedback on writing instantly, and even show if something was written by an A.I. There is even a function that will write a quiz on a Youtube video for you, without even having to watch it.

Students today?

A Brave New World

To say it is a “brave new world”, would be an understatement. When I first started teaching, a few kids had personal cell phones. We used transparencies on translucent projectors with handwritten notes a lot. Nowadays, all of that has changed.

Luckily, I feel like between blogging and teaching, I have a pretty decent command of these changes, but I know many teachers who are struggling mightily with them.

Will A.I. be a boon to eduaction or a bust? That has yet to be determined, but it seems here to stay.

  1. I need to find a good “AI checker“ app to run some of my students essays through. I know there’s a few of them out there. Any thoughts?

    But to be honest with you, even AI has its own writing style. I feel like I can tell when I’m reading something that comes off of ChatGPT.

    1. I think the one we have is called Magic Schoolbus. I am not sure how reliable it is, but at least it is something.

      When you get to klnow your students, it can be glaringly obvious, but how long will that hold true?

      2. Yeah I think its what its called, lol. I will take a look when I get home. It is pretry mindblowing, not sure if you need a district acct. to use.

  2. fortunately or unfortunately AI is here and getting more sophisticated everyday so we need to know how to use it and also how to recognize AI from things that are created by human minds entirely.

    1. It has incredible potential, but at this point I would say for education it has been bad.

  3. Yes so much in this subject. Hopefully we will all learn to be responsible with AI.

    1. The crazy thing is we are just at the beginning of the A.I. revolution. Imagine 10 years from now!

      1. I know it’s unimaginable what the future holds.

  4. I am not against technology, but I think, it is making our brains lazy. I know that in school, skills for math, grammar, writing and other subjects are taught so students work things through and think about what they are learning, but once they are no longer in the classroom, they will use the different apps available including AI. I know, for myself, my math skills are not what they used to be just because I use a calculator for anything I have to calculate. I guess time will tell if using AI will be beneficial in the long term as far as maintaining our cognitive abilities are concerned. But young students still in school are a long way off from that concern. Good post.
