Have you ever broken a bone?
I broke my ankle playing softball years ago. I went to slide into second base and never cleared my foot and it snapped. I also managed to pull all the tendons and ligaments at the same time.
Eight weeks in the middle of summer wearing a cast that isn’t supposed to touch the ground is a special kind of hell. It is hot and I sweat a lot, which in turn gave the cast a moist feeling. The moist feeling gradually changed to maddening itching sensations.
My kids were both toddlers at the tume as well, so parenting became very challenging. My wife quickly got overwhelmed. She could not keep up with it all and ended up taking family leave herself to care for me.
After a few weeks I would of given anything to be able to go run in a field. After eight weeks the cast came off after a very painful surgery and my leg looked 50% smaller in diameter than it had before.
The long process of rehabilitating began. The Kaiser doctors said I did not need physical therapy, that was a lie, so I limped around for about six months. I got a second opinion and my chiropractors insisted I absolutely needed physical therapy, so I finally got into that and it has made things much better, however, because the break was so severe the ankle will never be 100% stable again. Physical therapy and icing have allowed me to return to the sports I love, even softball, but it still bothers me at least a little most days because I have plantar fascitis from my gait being off.
The moral of the story is be thankful for what you have, while you have it, you never know when it might be taken away!
