If you could bring back one dinosaur, which one would it be?

Can We Bring Back Dinosaurs?

Can we bring back dinosaurs? This theme has been explored in depth in the famous Jurassic Park movies, but can we actually do it? I happen to of stumbled upon a lecture at the Natural History Museum in Los Angeles about just this question a few years ago and what they said was quite interesting. Similar to the Jurassic Park movies, there would be gaps in the DNA sequences that would need to be filled with other species DNA, so could we bring back a dinosaur from the past in its entirety, not likely, but we could probably get pretty close. In the movie, Jurassic Park, amphibian DNA was used to fill these gaps, but in real life, scientists are using chicken DNA for this purpose, which I found somewhat humorous. The big bad dinosaur is going to be a giant chicken!

Should We Bring Back The Dinosaurs?

Now should we revive dinosaurs, probably not, but when has that ever stopped us. I am not anxious to see Pterodactyl’s swooping in from the sky carrying children off of playgrounds, or having a T-Rex tear through the local drive in movie theater. I suppose if we did it in a very controlled manner, it would be less of an issue, but I don’t think this likely. I agree with the basic thesis in the Jurassic Park Movies that: 1) life will find a way, and 2) we are too greedy and foolish to use this technology safely. Initially, we may have the noblest of purposes and safest of controls, but how long until someone decides they can make a quick buck selling out the operation, as Dennis Neadry’s character did in the first Jurassic Park movie.

My Opinion

Of course, in a Malthusian way, this could be the answer to overpopulation, but I don’t think anyone is excited about that possibility. Personally, I would like to keep my dinosaur viewing limited to my pet Bearded Dragon, dinosaur bones, and fictional movies thank you very much, although it would be cool to see the ones with feathers (from a distance).
