I love Southern California cold weather. For Southern California a “cold” day is in the 50’s during the day and maybe touching 32 degrees at night. It usually is accompanied by coastal cumulous clouds rolling in through the day, creating “angels” of protection from the sun. Not all Californians are united in this belief.

Californians and Cold Weather

Many Californians do not like this “cold” weather, but this is because they lack a frame of reference for what cold actually is. I have lived in the mountains, so I have an idea of what 0 degrees with a 20 degree wind-chill feels like. I used to ski in it at Mammoth Mountain fairly frequently.

Actual Cold Weather

That type of cold goes right through whatever you are wearing like a knife. Three layers, Gore-Tex, ski socks, ski boots, basically just keep you alive and freezing until you get your body moving, then it is not so bad, until your sweat starts freezing onto your back and your in the beginning stages of hypothermia. That being said, if there is fresh snow out on the mountain, I will be out there.

California “Cold”

Southern California can get quite a bit of rain at times, and of course, if you get wet and then cold on top of it, it can be quite unpleasant, but I think that is true of anywhere.

When it snows in our local mountains, the temperatures rarely plunge below 20 degrees, which all in all is not that bad for winter sports. The wind can always be a factor even at 20 degrees, but typically cold weather gear can keep you nice and toasty on the inside.
