Core values play a vital role in giving one direction. This has certainly been very true for me in my life. I was extremely fortunate to grow up in a very nurturing environment at home and in my extra-curricular activities.

The Importance of Spirituality

I went to church regularly during my formative years and learned a great deal about philosophy, morality, and empathy. Even though I am no longer a avid churchgoer, the relationships I made during that time really set the stage for who I would become and who I wanted to be.

Loving Engaged Parents

I also had great parents who loved me very much and wanted nothing more than to see me be successful, even though we had a lot of very hard times, I always knew they loved me. On top of that, I had great friends and mentors through sports that really made me believe I could accomplish great things.

My Cultural Lens

As a teacher, I see the importance of these things in a child’s life and truly believe that the environment a child is raised in determines much about their future. I certainly had a good one.

  1. Very well said excellent essay. You obviously have a strong moral compass from your upbringing and experiences and that’s so important. I’m a lot like you. I had a good upbringing and a strong experience in my Catholic upbringing too. And I don’t go to church either. But I have my spiritual beliefs. I pray for many, and I still carry the belief. I don’t go to church as much anymore.

Well said again, sorry I went off on a tangent, but I really do like what you said. 😊

    1. We do seem to have similar backgrounds. Having a strong community around children is absolutely vital to their development. Thanks for the compliment!

  2. Fantastic blog post, Michael. Please keep up the good work … and I promise I will do my best not to show you any classy items.

    1. What do you mean?

      1. I will do my best not to show you things that I’m not supposed to show you.

      2. Let’s keep it that way.

  3. A well-composed piece on religion and instilling values in early life. Many people do not attend religious churches, temples, etc., but the values they learned early on seem to stick with most throughout life.

    1. Thank you for your complimemt! Religion is not perfect, but it does give is a lot of connection with each other. I am certainly grateful for my religious upbringing.
