A great teacher realizes that every student enters their class at a different place. The goal of the teacher is to help that individual grow.

Academics are important, no doubt, but there are other categories that are equally important to develop. Developing social skills, naking sure students can work with diverse groups of people. Communication skills are vital verbally, nonverbally, and as a digital citizen.

Some studets desperately need to acquire language skills. Some students need to learn some humility and character. Pasing tests and writing papers has its place, but truly great teachers understand the big picture and are willing to bend the rules to do what is best for students.

Education in the United States is run as a large corporation. There is a one size fits all mentality and a everyone is going to go to college mentality that can be quite harmful to teacher and student well being.

Fundamentally, learning should be something the studemts and the teacher enjoys. When students enjoy the instruction, have many social opportunities in a safe environment, they will thrive.

Learning is a wonderous process, an amazing ability that we all have and great teachers know how to harmess its power to inspire students.

  1. Great posts as always. I appreciate your honest insights about teachers and how they can assist students. Based on my personal experience, I have always regarded teachers as role models that have guided my life in the right direction. I feel one quality I always treasure in a teacher is appreciation of mental health. Some students often suffer from mental health issues that teachers should be aware of. Personally speaking, I’ve got severe anxiety that impacted by ability to succeed in high school. I remember having a panic attack in school after failure on a math exam. My teacher immediately recognized my mental health issues and told me to drop the course. He showed an understanding of mental health that I valued. I never did get over the panic attack but value my teacher for his assistance.

This post brought to mind the film “Good Will Hunting”. A beautiful film showing how therapists can be positive teachers helping traumatized individuals to cope with problems. One of my favorite films of all-time. Here’s why I recommend it:

    1. I think teachers tend to be much more sensitive to the needs of neuro-divergent individuals. I am glad your math teacher treated you well in that situation.

      Great recommendation!

  2. I’m old enough to remember teaching the way you’ve described it ~ with individualism and passion. I’m sure glad I’m not in today’s schools.

    1. Thanks! I am lucky I don’t have to worry about state testing so I have pretty much free reign to do what I think is best for students. It is a true luxury in the profession. I also work with an amazing and inspiring group of people. They always make me want to dig a little deeper.

      1. Gosh, that’s wonderful to hear!

      2. The hyperfocus on state testing really kills a lot of the intrinsic motivation for students. I have found that kids love to learn things, they just don’t like the stress and anxiety we put on them all the time. I stopped grading every assignment a couple years ago and just gave them space to practice and learn in a low-stakes way before big tests and projects and the classroom climate has become incredibly positive even though I teach a lot kids from inner-city areas in L.A.

      3. Oh, good for you!

      4. I am lucky, that is for sure! I like to think that my brand of education creates more positive long-term outcomes for students.

      5. I so totally think it does.

      6. Thanks Ana!
