I spend more time thinking about the future these days. I have a lot of goals that I want to accomplish and I think the happiest days of my life lie before me. I think I have dealt with most of my inner demons, or at least made enough peace with them that they keep their distance.

As a historian it is interesting to think about this question because inherently, I spend a lot of time thinking about the past, but I usually am doing it in a way that has something to do with the present or the future. The past is only truly useful in teaching us about what can happen in the future, or what to expect, so when I say that I think about the future more, it is in this way.
The past has many lessons to teach us, many things to offer us in terms of knowledge and precedence. It can be in a guide in a world of uncertainty. We don’t know for sure what will happen in the next five seconds, let alone five years, the only thing we can count on is the past. If you really think about it, the past is everything we know individually and collectively.
