I got into collecting Major League Baseball NFT’s a few years ago and have amassed a pretty decent collection. NFT is short for Non-Fungible-Token, or a unique digital product that can not be replicated. I did a fair amount of research on NFT’s and decided this was a legitimate collector’s item.

First Impressions of Candy MLB NFT’s
At first I thought it was just a scammy sort of deal. You buy “packs” of cards with varying value and then you can use them to complete “collections” and get more valuable cards. As I read more about NFT’s I realized that there is value there because of the fact that these NFT’s can not be copied. How many things in the marketplace can we say that about. Each has a unique location on the blockchain that is basically un-hackable and easily verified by third parties.

Economics of the Candy NFT Market
I started buying packs of these NFT’s and did not have a lot of success initially, but then started putting my economics knowledge to work and found “sweet spots” in the marketplace. Basically anything that is not insanely popular at the moment can be bought at a bargain price, specifically the packs. A lot of these packs are going to have some of the premium cards in them, some selling for thousands of dollars, so if one were to buy more of the packs at a lower price, we would anticipate a greater chance of higher rewards, and sure enough that is what happened. I started pulling some decent cards, one which I am trying to sell for around $300 right now, a rare Freddie Freeman highlight card.

The Results?
I haven’t put tons of money into this, but it is fun to look at them every so often and see how players seasons are impacting the value of the cards. Sometimes unexpected players start killing it and become a hot commodity while others fall off as their careers hit low points or they are forced to retire from baseball. I don’t know if I have made a net profit on these or not, but it is fairly close to even I believe. It is a fun hobby for now so I will probably keep on with it. If you are a big baseball fan or fan of collectibles, I would recommend NFT’s.
