I had a chance to take a quick trip to Mammoth Mountain and surprise, I took it. I thought it would be a spring skiing day followed by a fishing day, but the mountain had other plans.

Thirteen days of sunshine and then one day of random May blizzard. My easy fishing trip turned into something completely different.

The blizzard started around 12:00. We wanted to do some fishing so we puttered around Bishop after lunch. We first went to the Pleasant Valley Resevoir, which had a brush fore raging that we drove back to town to report, then reaumed looking for a fishing spot.

We fished a small park woth salmon eggs and high hopes, but alas no fish. Normally, that means we will just keep fishing somewhere else, but due to the blizzard unfolding in the high country, decided to get to our hotel asap.

Once we arrived I attempted to put chains on, but could not get them on. That meant probably staying in tonight as we have a kia sorrnto that is not AWD and has not been battle tested. Eventually we hunkered down for the night and ordered Dominoes.

I was not sure if I would be able to get out skiing in the morning, but I gave it a shot, walked half a mile to the bus stop, literally uphill into the wind. It was still snowing lightly and well below freezing.
I caught the Red Line around 8:00 a.m. which fully loaded with skiers ambled its way up the 3 miles to Mammoth Mountain.

This was a moment I really reconnected with my younger years and used to ride the Red Line to go to work or ride with friends. It was a grind, but it definitly built character in me.
Got to the mountain and I knew I only had about an hour and a half to get back for checkout. It was pretty crowded and at first I thought this was goimg to be one of those, don’t go to Mammoth on a Saturday days, but I made my way to the Unbound Snowboard Park and for whatever reason, there was very little line.

I got about seven runs in before packing it close to ten. It was windy but clear and the snow was a light fluffy powder in most places. Apparently the wind had been gusting up to 150 mph yesterday scouring some of the mountain.

Hustled back to the hotel, arriving early, strapping on my skis to ski through the parking lot for a couple last powder turns. Time to pack up and get some well deserved breakfast!
We will see what the rest of the day holds!
