If you had a million dollars to give away, who would you give it to?

If I had a million dollars to give away I would give it to my high school soccer and baseball programs. I have coached for both programs and I know how well they could use this money. Funding for sports has been cut down to the bone in my school district, to the point where the kids and families have to pay for pretty much everything.

A million dollars could go a long way toward scholarships for students who struggle to pay for sports. My school has a high poverty rate, so there are a lot of kids who don’t play sports just because it is too expensive. We do a pretty good job of giving the students opportunities to fundraise for their expenses, but there is always a few that struggle due to, a language barrier, or lack of support from home.

Maybe the money could be used to make an extra field which could be used to alleviate overcrowded practice spaces, or turn our grass field into a turf field. Our school has to compete with the much wealthier schools around us, so it seems our facilities are always not quite up to par with the others. I would like to see us have facilities comparable to these other schools.

  1. Our district is pay to play too. I think that’s the way it’s headed for a lot of places that haven’t already implemented it, unfortunately. 😞

    1. I heard that in Texas it is much better. Sports are fully funded, fundraising is just for extras. Our coaches are paid a pitiful amount.

  2. You know, I have heard that about Texas too.
