WordPress – Daily-Prompt – 2010 – What is the story behind your nickname?

I never was a Mr. B until I became a teacher. My last name is Bunch, which is a fairly uncommon name. Through the years I had many nicknames including but no limited to: Bunchy, Bunch of Grapes, Bunch of Bananas, Bunchito, Buncharama, Lunch Bunch, Bunch of hits, Toad The Wet Bunchie, Yogi, Buncherelli, Bunch Boy, Bunchy Boy, Buncherino, Bunch Dawg, Honey Bunches of Oats, Bunchanator, Mikeavelli, and so on….

I think students naturally gravitate towards calling their teacher Mr. or Mrs. then the first letter of their name in the U.S., not sure how it is in other countries.

The nickname Mr. B symbolizes my transition from a boy to a man in many ways. I went from a college educated ski bum, to a father and high school teacher in 2005. It was quite a transition and certainly not always an easy one, but I hung in there, worked hard, and now am in a great place with my career and family.

I suppose it denotes the transformation that has occurred from being someone mainly concerned with their own well being to a more socially aware and selfless version of myself that I like much better.

Anyway, that is about it for nickname story-time, got to get back to online summer school and lots of grading. Have a great Wednesday and hopefully I will see you back her soon at The Lifelong Education Blog!

  1. I can’t wait to read more of storytime about your experience as a teacher

    1. Thanks! I am glad you are enjoying it!

  2. As I was beginning the year 2016, I had started to call myself “Mr. Classy” on some occasions after purchasing my grey Michael Kors jacket at a local T.J. Maxx store in late 2015. Around that time one of my co-workers went by the name “Mr. Grey” at times … and I had decided to use the name “Mr. Classy” shortly thereafter. I was originally going to use that name in just 2016, but my friends responded to the name so well that I decided to make it stick.

  3. Me too! Those are some fun nicknames and certainly make a good post!
