How has technology changed your job?
How has technology not changed your job would be a better question. Technology seems to be constantly changing the way we teach kids.
When I first started teaching many moons ago, a few kids had cell phones. Now every kid has a cell phone. It used to be using computers was kind of a special thing for projects, now it is almost everyday.
The pandemic really ushered in the digital revolution in teaching. We had literally a week to figure out how to deliver content exclusively online. I remember people talking about it and I thought it was ridiculous, but it was no joke. They sent us home for a weekend and we didn’t come back for close to a year.
Although I miss my pandemic commute of putting slippers on and going downstairs, online only teaching for our students was a disaster. My school has a large at-risk (of dropping out) population. We did not realize how important it was for then to have extra-curricular activities to keep them focused in school. Test scores declined by 15-20% and students acquired significant gaps in their knowledge. While I am glad that deaths were potentially avoided. Our youth paid a heavy price for this safety.
We are still trying to pick up the pieces after the digital revolution and now its the A.I. Revolution already! Now we have that to contend with. We have systems in place to help mitigate some of these things, but it can be quite overwhelming for a high school teacher.
Can we hit the pause button on the technology? I know we can’t but it certainly would be nice to give educators time to adjust to what is out there right now.
