The Pandemic and the coinciding shut-down of the education system had a devastating impact on youth. As a high-school educator and parent I had a front-row seat for the disaster as it unfolded. Student performance declined markedly, “attendance” declined markedly, disillusionment with education ran rampant and depression rates skyrocketed.
Pandemic Academic Gaps
I appreciated our leaders attempts to protect us, but in my state, schools were shut-down for a year and half. As a result, all the norms or school behavior deteriorated drastically along with students having the prerequisite knowledge for the next progressions of their classes.
My Children’s Experience
My kids suffered greatly from this. The isolation, the loss of optimism for the future, the trauma of not being able to socialize freely really damaged kids. I will admit, I was scared during this time for my son who has asthma and was just as paranoid as anyone, but given the data, shutting down the schools that long was absolutely nuts to me.

Getting Back to Normal
Thank God we are in the post-pandemic world now and education is getting back to normal. Student behavior is getting back to where it was, learning is proceeding as before for the most part. My kids are doing much better as well, getting back into their extra-curricular activities. All I can say is, thank God we have come to our senses in relation to this matter!
