I have a lot of respect for professional athletes who go about their business in a professional manner.

Being an unbelievable talent on the field can be a very big ego pump. Everyone wants to be your friend, people give you special treatment, and it seems you can do no wrong.

It is a thin veneer though because you also become a target for some. Jealousy, envy, or sometimes outright hatred of your “priviliged position” helps focus the target.

All human beings make mistakes, but there is a limited scope for most of us that everyday mistakes on how many people find out about those mistakes or care about them.

When you are an athlete it is basically a unlimited scope. The media is always looking for the latest athlete misfortunes to turn into national news. Accusations are often enough for a guilty verdict in the court of public opinion.

Athletes that can navigate these challenges with grace deserve our respect, and so, I salute anyome who can.

  1. The big question though is how long does that elite worship status actually last? It’s what have you done lately that really matters.

    1. Absolutely….I think that is why people who maintain that status for a long time are so revered. Thanks for the comment.
