Relationships are often seen as negative by individuals in certain families. They cause strife, conflict, fighting, segueing, pain, sometimes devastation, disappointments, regret, longing, and co-dependence.

An easy way to avoid all this is for individuals to isolate themselves. No one to argue with, no one to disagree with, no one to lose your temper with, no one to hurt you….

The truth is though, the relationships that matter will put us through all of that and more.

On the other side of all those negative aspects are all the benefits of relationships. Interdependence, love, a sense of belonging, sharing, cooperation, social learning, and the antidote to loneliness.

The positive relationships we form in life, center on these core values (the positive side), but I don’t think we can escape the negative aspects either.

I think the greatest understanding is that those dark and difficult times make the great moments the great moments,

We can walk through life numb to everything and everyone around us out of fear of the unknown, being vulnerable, and losing our individual identity to a shared one, but what kind of life would that be?

  1. This reflection feels grounded and truthful. I appreciate how you don’t romanticize relationships, but acknowledge both the pain and the purpose they carry. Your insight—that the difficult moments give meaning to the joyful ones—rings especially true. It’s a thoughtful reminder that connection, with all its risks, is what keeps life human, textured, and deeply worth living.

    1. I had a college professor that started his class teaching us about Nietzsche. He would always tell us what made Nietzsche great was his ability to write “with blood”…to not mince words and spare feelings. This is the true purpose of writing to me.

Thank you for your thoughtful comments as always😊
