One of the keys to success in the classroom and on the field is establishing solid procedures and routines.

I have gotten into a good groove with this in my classes this year and it is paying dividends.

Students come into class, check their phones in before the bell rings to the cell phone caddy. Headphones are put away before I start speaking, for the most part.

Sub-Routines

I have different sub-routines for each type of activity we do. Nearpod and notes get a review using an app such as a Quizlet of the previous days material, then an self-paced Nearpod with three or four group activities embedded in the lesson.

We are doing a group project of some sort for each Chapter, usually ending in a “Gallery Walk” where the students present to one another and write summaries of the projects they view.

Test tests are all custom made. I am not a big fan of test generator software. The questions can be very convoluted.

Last But Not Least

Reflecting on one’s lesson is argueably the most important aspect of teaching. Looking closely in the mirror and being honest about what is working and what is not (your reading mine today)

Anyway, a little snapshot of my day as a teacher. Happy Thursday to you all!

  1. How do you make sure that each student remains accountable to their full group effort? Do you assign each of them different tasks?

    1. I monitor them closely and make sure they understand I do not want them doing other people’s jobs. To the point though, yes I have them divide up the work evenly. They put their names on their website pages or slides, or whatever it is, but it is still part of the greater whole.
