Trusting ones instincts can be a double-edged sword. Sometimes our instincts lead us to incredibly intuitive decisions, but can also deter us from following logic. When it comes to trusting ones instincts a pragmatic approach seems to me the best.

Pragmatism teaches that we should do what makes sense for us, solves our problems, not necessarily being tied to one ideology or another. Sometimes a idealistic philosophy will serve us best, and sometimes not… Existentialism can shed great clarity on situations, but also leave one feeling isolated and detached.

I think it all depends on the situation one is confronted with in regards to how to best proceed. When driving for example: we should rely on logic in the following of the traffic laws, however, if someone slams on their breaks unexpectedly, following our instincts to avoid danger will serve us best because there is simply not enough time to make a logical analysis of the situation.

Similarly in life, we have our day to day situations that may require a logical solution, deep thinking, planning, reflection and collaboration. When given these opportunities, I tend to use that time until a clear course of action appears, but then there are those situations where an instinctual response is required.

I think in a general sense I trust those instincts, but I am also wary of them as they can lead me into trouble if followed exclusively.

  1. This is such a thought-provoking reflection on the interplay between instincts and logic. I love how you’ve framed the idea of pragmatism as a guiding principle—adapting to what the situation demands rather than rigidly following one approach. The driving metaphor is particularly relatable, illustrating how instincts and logic must coexist harmoniously to navigate both literal and metaphorical roads in life.

Your cautionary stance on instincts is refreshing—trusting them but not letting them lead exclusively shows a mature understanding of decision-making. It’s a reminder that while our instincts often guide us well, taking the time to reflect and analyze is equally important when circumstances allow. A great balance of insight and practicality here!

    1. Thanks Johnbritto! It is always hard to know when to trust intuition/instincts and when not to. Thanks for the comment. How has your blog been doing?

      1. You’re welcome! You’re absolutely right—distinguishing between when to trust our instincts and when to pause for deeper reflection can be challenging. It’s something I’m constantly learning to navigate too.
