The Best and Least Expensive Places To Retire In The World

#1 – Portugal – I just had a friend who retired to Portugal from Southern California and she is absolutely loving it. It features a pleasant climate, relative political stability, access to the rest of Europe and North Africa, plus a favorable exchage rate for the U.S. dollar. A big plus is you can try surfing the big waves at Nazare’.

If you have never seen these waves, they are absolutely incredible.

#2 – Costa Rica – Similar to Portugal, Costa Rica offers a low cost of living, beautiful scenery, and easy access to Central America, South America, and North America for adventures. For Americans the U.S. dollar is very strong here.

#3 – Mexico – Mexico is a vast country with many different cultures and traditions. I have been there several times and have always been impressed by the friendliness of the people and the beauty of the natural landscape.

A decent sized apartment in the coastal city of Ensenada can be had for $216,307. In Los Angeles right now, you can get a motor home for that much…maybe.

#4 – Ecuador – I have never been personally, but I have heard a lot of good things about Ecuador. It has a lot of outdoor opportunities with a diverse climate of rainforest and mountains. It also features, affordability and quality for retirement as well as being centrally located in South America.

Wherever you decide to retire, be sure to keep in mind affordability and quality of life. Don’t be afraid to live in another country! One of the things that keeps us youthful and healthy is not letting our lives get stagnant! We thrive on new experiences!

    1. Interesting post. I relocated to Italy. It’s a great place to live if you enjoy history, art, food, wine, coffee, good weather and relaxed living.

Not so great: Bureaucracy is awful, police control every aspect of daily life, Italians have zero patience. Especially when driving 😂

But you can literally talk your way out of anything (as long as it’s not criminal of course), everything is negotiable 😊

      1. Sounds like fun! It would be so cool to live in a new country. How far does the dollar go there?

        1. Do you mean the exchange rate? Not too in favour of the dollar I think. Otherwise everything is paid in Euros.

        2. Yes, I meant is the cost of living a lot lower. Los Angeles is ridiculous right now. Fast food combo meal is $18!

        3. That’s true cost of living is lower. Still life in the north of Italy is quite expensive, which is the economic powerhouse of Italy.

Whereas in the south the cost of living is much cheaper, but the infrastructure is not as good as in the north. Depends also what you compare, as you said LA is quite expensive.

        4. How do they treat you as an American?

        5. Well, I can answer this question as a “straniero”, foreigner, in Italy. However I’m not American, although I have very strong connections to the US.

Living as a foreigner in Italy is a mixed bag, sometimes it’s hard when Italians are rude to you, refuse to speak another language and I speak fluently English, French, German and Spanish. I’m far from fluent in Italian, but I understand most of it when natives speak.

Then again, Italians can be so nice and welcoming. I’m told Italians in the south are even warm and welcoming than in the North, where it’s all about work and making money.

Would I do the relocation to Italy again? Yes, but certainly, not in the north of Italy.

        6. Interesting!
