If you could un-invent something, what would it be?

I would uninvent student poverty. After teaching for twenty plus years I have come to the conclusion that society should put much more into making sure children’s basic needs are met in order for them to be successful. We have made some progress since the Pandemic when California at least, realized that giving all students free access to food at school is a really good idea if you want to improve learning. What would happen if we could end childhood poverty?

Many of my students that struggle are fighting an invisible enemy. They are working long hours to help pay bills, living in crowded noisy living conditions, and often times commuting great distances each day, just for the opportunity to go to school. After a few weeks of this, they get worn out, and begin to lose focus in class, fall behind and sometimes drop out. It is a waste of human capital and sets up a lot of kids for failure later in life, due to no fault of their own.

Our school and district at least has really tried to make strides in offering basic wellness services to students: peer counseling, extra counselors, a wellness center, turkey’s on Thanksgiving, and so on and so forth. I am not a big proponent of socialism so I am not saying pure Socialism is the way forward, but meeting basic needs of students should be more of a priority. If we can spend trillions of dollars on: wars, prisons, and foreign aid, why can’t we make our kids more of a priority? After all, they will be the ones we entrust with the world when we get older….

  1. Every child should have the opportunity to go to school . With a shirt, pants , shoes and not have to worry about their safety .

    1. I could not agree more! If your starving or don’t know where you will sleep at night, how can you focus on learning? We don’t work that way. Thanks for the thoughtful comment.😁

  2. It is a very sad situation the world over.

    1. Education is the best investment we can make. It doesn’t work though when students do not have basic needs met. Maybe one day we will figure it out😂

  4. Great post, Allen. Chris White answered the prompt with ‘Greed,’ and the same applies here. It is greed that is causing poverty. Priorities always lean towards things that will generate more money (quick ROI), and for some reason, the governments of this world have decided that solving poverty (ROI over a long period) is not one of them. Leaders could solve poverty in an instant, but they are choosing not to, so it is up to us to continue supporting as best we can.

    1. I agree, major downside of capitalism. Adam Smith thought it was essential that society have a wide social safety net because of the inherent i equities in the system. So far most countries do not meet that standard.

      1. Agree. I think the social safety net was meant for “use in case of an emergency” kind of thing. We need to solve corruption, income and gender equality, and responsible fatherhood first (I’m probably forgetting a few others) and then we can set up a safety net to support the ones with no way out.

      2. A democracy is only as good as the morals of the people running it.
