Daily writing prompt
What do you love about where you live?

Introduction

I live on the northern outskirts of Los Angeles in a suburban community. Southern California is a very busy place, with millions of people living in close proximity. It has great wealth and poverty, usually separated by freeways or train tracks. The climate can be very hot in the summer, up to 115 degrees (Fahrenheit). In the winter, the temperature is usually around 70 degrees during the day.

Seven Things I Love About Living Near Los Angeles

#1 – The Climate – Although I am partial to colder climates in many ways, not having to deal with snow on roads while commuting makes Los Angeles a great place to live. We still get a fair amount of snow in the local mountains and we have the Sierra Nevada Mountain Range about three hours away if time in the snow is what one is looking for.

#2 – The Beach – The oceans here are fairly cold most of the year, but in the summer, when the rest of the region becomes uncomfortably hot, the beach is always 72 degrees it seems. When you have lived here a while, you find beaches that are less populated and can have a surprising amount of privacy while you are out there, if that is what you are looking for.

#3 – The People – Angelenos are a hearty group. People from all over the world congregate here and they bring great diversity in: food, art, music, and culture to the city. Most people you meet here are very friendly and happy to help you with whatever you need. It is a beautiful mosaic of humanity.

#4 – The Sierra Nevada Mountains – One of Angeleno’s favorite places to go is called Mammoth Lakes California. This ski resort town receives an average of 400 inches of snow per year. It has a massive ski state of the art ski resort and all the amenities of a resort destination. I liked it so much, I lived and worked there for three years in my twenties and very nearly never left. In the summer, there are endless places to explore, fish, hike, and just relax.

#5 – Palm Springs – Palm Springs got its name because in the middle of the Mojave Desert, a desert oasis sprouted in the most unlikely of places. This oasis gradually became an outpost of civilization and eventually a resort. The city, as the name suggests, has palm trees almost every direction you look. It is surrounded by the San Jacinto Mountains and there is a gondola that will take you to the top of these mountains, which have skiing and sledding in the winter. Palm Springs has been a getaway for celebrities since movie stars were a thing.

#6 – Dodger Stadium – Dodger Stadium has to be one of my favorite places to go in the city. Steeped in history and the culture of baseball, Dodger Stadium is at once a visit to a historical monument and electrifying experience for the baseball fan. The stadium is the heart of the city and the citizens of Los Angeles take great pride in their team.

#7 – Las Vegas – If you drive four hours out of L.A. (assuming no traffic), you can be in fabulous Las Vegas. Las Vegas has every type of entertainment, shopping, dining, and gaming activity you could possibly want. If you drive or fly in at night, it is quite spectacular to see all the grand hotels lit up, billboards flashing, and just the general spectacle of lights. You can even drive a tank!

Conclusion

If you have never been, I would highly recommend visiting Los Angeles. There are countless things to do, places to visit, and interesting day or weekend trips. The climate is pretty ideal most of the year, especially close to the beach, the people are friendly, and best of all, it is my home!
