Daily writing prompt
Who are your favorite artists?

When it comes to artists, I think of painters, and my favorite painters are from the Renaissance period in Europe. The Renaissance came on the heels of The Black Death which greatly weakened the feudal system.

When one looks at the art of the time periods pre-dating the Renaissance in Europe, it is almost all directly related to religious events, specifically Christian ones. The birth of Christ, the life of Christ, and the Ascension of Christ, all played vital roles in the Medieval power structure. Most of the art, commissioned by church authorities, is logically related to Christianity.

The Renaissance showed contrasted with Medieval largely religious art, with vibrant colors, realism, in essence, newfound freedom.

During the Renaissance, art experienced radical and unprecedented development. This article lays out all the important painters, sculptors, and architects whose masterpieces helped transform the world of art.”

Artists became free of some of the constraints of the past with a more secular culture that began to depart from the strict interpretation of the Bible the Catholic Church enforced. The Protestant Reformation in 1517, further emboldened artists of all stripes to challenge the existing power structures in subtle or not-so-subtle ways.

Michaelangelo painted the Sistine Chapel from 1508 to 1512, which is widely regarded as one of the greatest masterpieces of the time period, although this was more of a religious-themed painting. The techniques and materials he used were largely byproducts of the newly emerging Scientific Revolution.

Who can forget the Mona Lisa, Leonardo Da Vinci’s most famous painting? This magnificent piece was painted in 1503. It sits in the Louvre in France in a bulletproof, airtight case, that thousands travel the globe to see each year. The trademark grin looking back at them, like the artists of the Renaissance smirking at the rigidity of the past.
