Daily writing prompt
What is your favorite type of weather?

My favorite type of weather is when I am out skiing and there is a snowstorm with, maybe a little bit of wind, big fluffy white snowflakes, and an accumulation of snow.

I have spent more money than I care to think about pursuing my love of skiing and snowboarding over the years, but I have to say there is nothing like it, especially on a “powder day”. A “powder day” is any day that there is more than 6 inches of fresh snow on the ground. If this snow happens to occur during a day when it is snowing, it is called “free refills”, meaning every run you get a fresh line of new snow.

Gliding through the powder snow on ski’s or a snowboard truly feels divine. It reminds me of this famous quote from one of my favorite movies:

As a Presbyterian, my father believed that man by nature was a damned mess, and that only by pickingĀ up God’s rhythms, were we able to regain power a beauty

A River Runs Through It

It truly is a religious experience for me. It is like time suspends and you are just gliding through the universe’s infinite perfection.

I lived in a ski resort town in Northern California for three years as I suppose what people today would call “gap years”. The culture of the town revolved around skiing and snowboarding. The top skiers and snowboarders were revered for their style and innovation in the sport. It was kind of expected that as a local you would be skiing at least a couple days a week. One year I had 124 ski days, which I am quite proud of.

During that time, I experienced all sorts of different conditions. Some days were snowy, some almost like summer, and everything in between. I lived in a rundown apartment with my girlfriend or employee housing which amounted to a college dorm type of situation, but I don’t know if I ever felt richer in my life.

    1. I just finished the book, “For Whom the Bell Tolls” which is set in that area. It sounds like an amazing place, when not fighting a war of coursešŸ˜
