Beach or mountains? Which do you prefer? Why?

I do love both, but I would have to go with the mountains. I am lucky to live an hours drive from either place so I spend time at both, but I grew up in the local Southern California mountains and I wish I never left.

The Small Town Vibe

I think I miss the community spirit of mountain towns the most. I live in a nice suburban part of Los Angeles and it is great, but feels so impersonal at times. There is very little that binds people together into a collective community unless there is some sort of disaster.

Mountain living is different in some respects because typically people are more interdependent ok each other. This leads to shared problems and shared solutions, a greater tolerance of differences, and opportunities to show true moral character.

City Life Versus Mountain Life

I marvel at the fact that in the city, despite shopping at pretty much the same places for years, I rarely see the same people, except for the workers. In mountain towns, you see people you know a lot, which opens doors for creating ties of community.

There is also a man vs. nature quality to mountain life that the city does not typically offer. For instance, if the weather is bad, people need help with shoveling driveways or getting to and from the grocery store. People tend to display a little more concern for each other because they are not just simply overwhelmed with the volume of people they see everyday.

I have to say skiing and snowboarding are my favorite sports, although living away from the mountains I don’t get to do it as much as I would like. When I lived in Mammoth Lakes I skied 120+ days one year! It was amazing!

Anyway, that is my two cents about the subject. What do you prefer, mountains or beach? Enjoy the rest of your Thanksgiving Weekend and thank you for reading The Life Long Learning and Education Blog!
