What was the last thing you did for play or fun?

Living in Southern California offers many opportunities for recreation and “fun”. Winter in many places in the U.S. and throughout the world can be stifling due to cold weather and “cabin fever”. Southern Californians rarely have this problem in the winter. Here are my top 5 funnest things to do in Southern California during Winter. Feel free to agree or disagree and/or add to the list!

#1 Visit the Beach

Southern California is world renowned for its selection of beaches. Winter can be a little colder, but still offers many scenic temperate days of idyllic temperature. I enjoy fishing in the ocean and there are anpme places to do this, plus the crowds are gone for the most part. Winter beach visits are definitely “slept on” in So. Cal.

#2 Skiing and Snowboarding

Bear Mountain Monday

Two hours give or take from the beach you will find the local mountains of Southern California. Big Bear Lake, Mt. Baldy and Wrightwood esch have unique ski resorts. Go for a day or week if you prefer. The snow conditions vary a lot from year to year, but Bear Mountain and Mountain High (Wrightwood) have extensive snow making capabilities. We were at Bear Mountain two days ago and they had most of the mountain open without any natural snow! It was pretty amazing!

#3 – Universal Studios Citywalk

Universal Studios Citywalk has many great forms of entertainment for the whole family. Citywalk boasts a state of the art theater with reclining seats (they do validate parking) including a full bar along with a collection of fantastic restaurants. Free abd paid concerts take place here in the quad area of the mall. The only cost is what you spend and parking.

#4 Exploring Griffith Park

Griffith Park Observatory – (open year-round)

Griffith Park, centrally located on the West side of L.A offers a myriad of opportunities to recreate. At over 20 square miles, it is quite a large park and contains the Griffith Observatory, Hollywood Bowl (concert venue), along with the L.A. Zoo amoungst meandering hiking trails and children’s playgrounds. The summer can be pretty hot in the park, but winter can be quite sublime most days. The observatory does not charge for general admission athough they do charge for parking now.

#5 – Take A Day Trip To San Diego

La Jolla Beach

San Diego for many tourists is favored over Los Angeles due to the ideal climate and myriad of attractions there. San Diego beaches are amazing and very cost-effective for those of us “ballin’ on a budget”, but there are many other things to do. If you have children in the 4-12 year old range, Legoland in Carlsbad is a great place to make memories. Sea World in San Diego is also nearby if you want to say hello to the Penguins. San Diego golf courses are phenomenal as well.

Conclusion

Southern California in the winter really is an ideal place to be. I highly recommend visiting sometime fir those of you who have never been, or anyone really. What are sole of the fun things tondo where you live? Do you have recommendations for the Southern California area?
